Theatre Tuesdays, June 7 (Under Milk Wood), 14 (Escape), 21 (Devil’s Disciple), 28 (cancelled)

Tuesdays at 8 pm, free.  Artword Theatre hosts “Theatre Tuesdays” — readings from new plays, works-in-progress, favourite plays, and/or short theatrical presentations, films about theatre, etc. To get involved, as a writer, reader, presenter, actor, listener… contact us: artword@artword.net
June 7, a reading of Under Milk Wood, a radio drama by Welsh-born poet and writer Dylan Thomas. Thomas died in New York in 1953 after delivering a draft of the work and it was published posthumously in 1954.  The play opens at night, when the citizens of Llareggub are asleep. An all-seeing narrator (First Voice/Second Voice) invites the audience to listen to the dreams and innermost thoughts of the inhabitants of an imaginary small Welsh village. Morning breaks. The characters awake and go about their morning — their gossiping, their nagging, their daydreaming, their longing. Beautiful language, many wonderful characters, some lovely comic parts — plenty for everyone! All readers welcome.
June 14, An advance reading of “Escape” by Robert Savoie, directed by Brian Morton. Cast: Joshua Shutter as Robbie, Chris Cracknell as Older Robert, Carla Zabek as Amelia, Brian Morton as Harry
It’s Halloween night, 1973, and ten year old Robbie finds himself alone in the time out room once again.  But it’s through the eye of an older Robbie, the narrator, that we learn of the circumstances leading up to that incarceration, and the life journey that followed.  Thanks to the help of Amelia, a young social worker, and Harry, a mental patient in the St John New Brunswick Insane Asylum, that journey was not one of escape from life but to life.
See “Escape” in the Hamilton Fringe Festival, July 14 to 24, at the DAC Studio,  28 Rebecca Street, Tickets: $9.00,  Show Length: 80 minutes, Company: Majik Man Productions.
June 21: Come and help us read The Devil’s Disciple by George Bernard Shaw. Set during the American Revolution, this play is full of Shaw’s love of paradox. A man who glories in repudiating the puritan morality of the day (the Devil’s disciple) chooses to sacrifice himself to save a minister of God. There is a fascinating and amusing depiction of the British General “Gentleman Johnny” Burgoyne. All readers and listeners welcome.
June 28: cancelled.

Theatre Tuesdays, April 5, 12, 19, 26

Tuesdays at 8 pm, Artword Theatre hosts “Theatre Tuesdays” — readings from new plays, works-in-progress, favourite plays. Maybe short theatrical presentations, films about theatre, etc. To get involved, as a writer, reader, presenter, actor, listener… contact us: artword@artword.net
Tuesday April 5: Local playwright Peter Gruner reads from new work and work-in-progress. Sponsored by the Playwrights Guild of Canada. Peter’s play “The Laund-o-mat at the End of the World” was a 2009 Fringe hit and a hold-over at Theatre Aquarius.
Tuesday April 12: A reading of Bernard Shaw’s delightful 1912 satire “Fanny’s First Play“. The outer frame in prologue and epilogue feature four theatre critics who have been invited to a performance of a young lady’s first play at her father’s grand home. Savage satire and silly fun, with feisty young women (some of whom are even those trouble-making ‘suffragettes’), pompous parents, callow young men, and of course opinionated critics.
Tuesday April 19: Theatre Tuesday combines with Green Drinks, the once-a-month social gathering of people who are involved in ecological issues. It’s a relaxed and friendly thing, with lots of good conversation. Doors open at 5:30 pm.
At about 8 pm, Artword Theatre presents a 20-minute excerpt from Ronald Weihs’ clown play “The Beavers“, a comedy based on the style of Aristophanes. The chorus of Beavers confront the humans with a satiric analysis, in rhyme, song and dance, of everything the humans have been doing wrong.
Tuesday April 26: TBA

“The music of Fish & Bird is rooted in an authentic love for folk music, but it€™s a tough love that doesn’t stop them from showing the genre a little abuse. They have been compared to an €œold timey Radiohead€ €“ the kind of thing that might have resulted if a lost tribe of art-school rockers discovered a crate full of banjos, fiddles and old records washed up on the shore. Poetry: Sharon McCartney & Glen Sorestad, Sun Sep 26, 2 pm

Sharon_McCartney_400.jpgGlen_Sorestad_head2005_400.jpgSunday September 26 at 2 pm. Featured readers are two distinguished poets on tour to launch their new books: Sharon McCartney, from Fredericton, with her new collection For and Against, and Glen Sorestad, from Saskatoon, with his recent collection What We Miss. Also reading are four Sarnia poets: Norma West Linder, Peggy Fletcher, Lynn Tait and Adele Kearns Thomas. Plus a presentation by Debbie Okun Hill on the late poet Al Purdy and efforts to preserve his A-frame cabin at Ameliasberg. Hosted by James Deahl.
Sharon McCartney’s For and Against: “A vibrant and disturbing new collection of poems, For and Against is a sizzling set that interposes vivid recollections of past hurts and triumphs with surprising descriptions of daily life. As George Elliott Clarke has remarked about Sharon€™s work; €œYou don€™t read these poems, you feel them: hammer in the head, shod foot on the throat, stiletto in the heart.€
Glen Sorestad’s What We Miss: “These narrative poems are coloured with both curiosity and nostalgia and framed in a personal montage. Sorestad€™s free verse captures the flora and fauna, the natural rhythms and colour of Saskatchewan. Celebrating the ordinary and seeing the mystery in all moments of life remains part of his poetic priority.”

OpenStreetsHamilton.jpgOn June 6th, from 10 am to 3 pm, James Street North, from Cannon to Burlington, will be closed to automobiles, and open to a festival of people walking, cycling, rollerblading, watching demonstrations, trying a new activity, listening to music and bands, or shopping in the various shops and restaurants along the street. Concert: Haut-Canada Trio, oboe, bassoon, piano, May 29

Haut_CanadaTrio_Artword_Artbar_c.jpgSaturday, May 29, 8 pm, $10, at Artword Artbar. It’s Saturday night and the Haut-Canada Trio is back! They performed at our Classical Cafe (in association with the Brott Music Festival) in March, their debut concert as a Trio (photo right). It was fantastic, and we all wanted more, so here comes the Trio:  Marc Gibbons, oboe; Spencer deMan, bassoon; Talisa Blackman, piano. They are young, fun, and very good. And you can have a glass of wine while you enjoy the music.
Oboe, bassoon and piano are a rare combination in chamber music. What a wonderful sound. The Trio has done some innovative transcriptions. In March they played some well-known operatic duets, with oboe as the female voice and bassoon as the male. Yes, it works!

Modern_Field_Recorings_0096c.jpgSaturday May 22 at 8 pm. A wonderful band from Guelph: Modern Field Recordings — Christopher (singer, guitar), Bob (double bass), Taylor (guitar),  Jes (singer, keys), Jen (bassoon). Here’s their story: “Started at the beginning of 2009, Modern_field_recordings_c.jpgModern Field Recordings was a way to validate the many break ups had and love letters written. a chance for the three of us to be honest with those around us and maybe help people that might be going through the same thing. noble? perhaps. emotional? a little. it was never our intent to wear our hearts on our sleeves that’s just where we happened to find them.” http://www.myspace.com/modernfieldrecordings (Kori Pop recommended them to us, and we love her musical taste, so come out and here them!)
