Slightly Below the Surface is the story about a life journey, spanning over 60 years under the watchful eye of the 250 year old spirit, Elizabeth Watts. The Boy is born on the hundredth anniversary of her death in 1856. She had been a teacher in the old schoolhouse where he grew up and currently resides. Beginning in rural Ontario in the 1960’s, the Boy discovers his calling to be a songwriter. Thursday September 26, 2109, at 8 pm, $10. The Planet of the Loops returns! Noted guitarist Andrew Aldridge and his legendary Planet of the Loops live at Artword Artbar. Special guests for Thurs Sept 26 are cellist Cheryl O and Steven Sauvé on keyboard / laptop, both members of quasiMODAL, a floating electro-accoustic improv trio.
Join us for a night of live improvised recycling of sounds! Anything can happen, and frequently does! Andrew explains: “In 1998 I started a Collective event called Planet of the Loops. It’s an improvisational/ experimental night consisting of 3-4 players. It ran in Toronto until 2005. Then I moved to Hamilton and occasionally had some Planet events in various locations. I was touring a lot too and couldn’t do a regular monthly event.” In 2017 Andrew brought his Planet of the Loops to Artword Artbar. VJ improviser Judith Sandiford joins in with real-time visual “looping”.

Paul Lisson, The Perfect Archive, book launch, Sun Sept 22 at 4 pm

August 8th, 2019
Comments Off on Paul Lisson, The Perfect Archive, book launch, Sun Sept 22 at 4 pm

Sunday September 22, 2019, at 4:00 pm. Book launch: The Perfect Archive by Paul Lisson, published by Guernica Editions.
The Perfect Archive is a story in verse about an archivist who moves beyond his role as protector and cataloguer of others’ work and begins to question the very nature of a “pure and accurate” archive. The role of a government Archivist is to organize and catalogue books, statutes, and memoranda. What happens when these documents are weaponized?

“Paul Lisson creates intricate Kafkaesque worlds in art galleries, on the stage, and on the page. A coal black seam of humour runs through all of his work but I mostly feel like I’ve walked through a dystopic door and I have this prickly feeling that somebody’s going to lock that door behind me.” Jeff Mahoney, columnist with The Hamilton Spectator
