Artword Artbar is pleased to host Insurgent Theatre, currently touring with two projects: a film, The Shadow of Lucasville, screening and  facilitated conversation, and their newest play Know Your Enemy. (They brought “In the Belly” to Artword Artbar two years ago.)
Monday August 26, 7 pm: Film: The Shadow of Lucasville, the follow-up to the award winning documentary film, The Great Incarcerator, part 1: Dark Little Secret. Directed by D Jones – 60 minutes.  https://www.facebook.com/TheShadowOfLucasvilleMovie
The Shadow of Lucasville revisits the 1993 uprising at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, one of the longest in U.S. history, while exploring the fight for human rights and media exposure through inmate uprisings in response to mass incarceration and dehumanization supported by the prison industrial complex. The film will be followed by conversation with former prisoners. $5-20 suggested donation, no one turned away for lack of funds. TobaccoTroubadour_443_smallTobacco_Troubadour_poster_tour2013Unfortunately we had to cancel our tour to Delhi Aug 24 and Hagersville Sept 7. We will bring it back another way another time when circumstances permit. Tobacco Troubadour is a musical play about growing up in tobacco country in the 70s, based on the songs of J.P. Riemens, with script and direction by Ronald Weihs. Starring J.P. Riemens & the Barflies (Brian Griffith lead guitar, Carrie Ashworth bass) and the Artword Theatre Ensemble: Pamela Gardner, Paula Grove, Gordon Odegaard and Ryan Sero.

Art_Slam2From 7 to 9 pm: something new! an Art Slam, organized by Gordon Puittinen. Watch the paintings being made, cheer on your favourites, plus voting and prizes. As Gord writes on Facebook: “Speed Painting Competition: 1 hour to paint using acrylic on canvas ( All materials will be supplied, or bring your own). cash prizes with live music.”
From 9:30 pm: Jazz with Ethan Tilbury upright bass, Thom Mason guitar, Patrick Panus tenor sax, Luke Paron drums. A night reflecting on the musical contributions and styles of Charlie Parker. They’ll be playing several Charlie Parker tunes with a few surprises throughout the night.

Folk-rock band from Waterloo  The Royal Streets, on tour: Algernon Friolet (vocals & guitar), Mike Demsey (guitar), Jillian Dowding (vocals), Eric Stirtzinger (guitar). Lora_BidnerTouring with The Royal Streets is Lora Bidner, is a talented folk artist who resides in Ottawa, and now plays with The Musettes. Along with vocals, Lora plays a variety of instruments including the hang drum, ukelele, guitar and piano. She has shared the stage with Craig Cardiff, Justin Nozuka, Jill Barber, Danny Michel, and many more. http://www.lorabidner.com/
Justin_ToitoAnd rounding out the bill is Justin Toito, of Hamilton. From age nine onwards, he has thrown his heart and soul into making and playing music. Throughout his musical career he has played guitar, piano, drums, bass and lead vocals for many bands, but has now focused on his own solo career, performing at various venues around Southern Ontario with his own original music. He has currently been working hard in the studio in Hamilton recording his first single “Memory” with producer Dan Hosh.

beer-tastingTwo weekends of Beer Tap Takeover Tastings, plus some great music and some special programming. eugene2crop_200Saturday August 10, 8 pm, cover $5-$10. Special concert featuring Eugene Martynec, laptop wizard, with some real-time compositions, with Sean Dowhaniuk on guitar, Jennifer Lockman on piano, Ethan Tilbury on bass, and Judith Sandiford on realtime video mixing. Eugene is a longtime associate of Artword Theatre in Toronto, where he ran a music series Sunday evening for four years. Lately he has been spending a lot of time in Europe, jamming with the London Improvisers Orchestra, and others, from Barcelona to Berlin. He is back in Toronto briefly, so we’ve got him booked!
