An evening of Latin American music by Nano Valverde + Ayekan Ensemble, an ensemble of quena (bamboo flute), flute, guitars, violin, double bass. Band members Nano Valverde, Peter Dean, Tim FitzGerald, Irena Josipovic, Samantha Chang, and Miguel Vasquez will be playing Nano Valverde’s compositions. Special guest for the evening is Marcelo Puente, Chilean singer-songwriter. For more information about Ayekan: https://www.facebook.com/ayekanensemble/?fref=ts
Nano’s compositions and arrangements are grounded in South American Folk music, but also show the influences of a wide variety of other traditions, most importantly the minimal music movement most closely associated with the composers Steve Reich and Philip Glass. In bringing together these different styles and traditions in their performances, Ayekan seeks to break down the barriers that still separate musical styles and cultures: folk and classical, Latin American and European, traditional and contemporary.
