Jazz: Birth of the Cool tribute, Thurs May 29

Birth_of_the_CoolThursday May 29, 2014, at 8 pm,$5. Bassist Devin Patten has organized a tribute evening to the great Miles Davis record Birth of the Cool. Birth of the Cool, the classic compilation album by Miles Davis and his nonet  was recorded in 1949-1950 and released in 1957.
Players include Esther Matthew trumpet,  Jason Louge  flugelhorn, Kristen Prince alto sax, Victoria Cox baritone sax, Aidan Sibley trombone, Munro Thadius tuba, David Hollingshead piano, Dan Pitt guitar, Devin Patten bass, Zach Thompson drums.
Devin’s note: “Featuring unusual instrumentation, the music consisted of innovative arrangements influenced by classical music techniques such as polyphony, and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title implies, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz.”
