Marie Avery, The Benefit of the Free Man, & Peace and Love Heidi, Thurs May 23

Marie_Avery_650.jpgThursday May 23 at 8 pm, $7. Singer-songwriter Marie Avery hosts an evening of music with guests The Benefit of The Free Man and Peace and Love Heidi.
Marie Avery
has been described as ‘a voice that cuts through the night like a dangerous yet delicate switchblade’. Having just released her debut EP a few months ago in Hamilton, Marie continues to build a fan base on home turf. www.marieaverymusic.com
Peace and Love Heidi, a songstress from Brantford, Benefit_of_the_Free_Man_c650.jpgwill open up the night with her naturalistic ballads and love songs. Her soaring voice will leave you entranced.
The Benefit of The Free Man, Anna Jarvis (cello); Greg O’Toole (guitar, vox); Lee Piazza (vox); Mike Legere (percussion), hail from Toronto and have been infiltrating the Hamilton scene with their unique take on chamber folk.  “The really fascinating thing about this band is their inversion of the standard band formula: the songs are all built around classical string instruments, minimalist percussion and the rattling cadences of Piazza’s lyrics. All of this leads to a sound that is rich but unsettling; the negative space in the music becomes an instrument in itself.” (Audio Reckoning).  They have recently been rated as one of the top 50 bands to see in Toronto by Bevdale Mansion and were January’s featured artist on theindiemachine.com.
