Ellen_Irving_Explosion_in_threes_700.jpgA graduate of Ontario College of Art, Ellen Irving is a Hamilton, Ontario-based artist with a distinctive vision born of obsession, an explorer’s curiosity, and an uncommon engagement with aspects of Canadian history, settings and peoples. Her paintings have an energetic immediacy, reflecting the visceral response evoked in her by the subjects she is compelled to convey.

Painting trips have taken her from James Bay, to Saguenay, to Tom Thomson’s Canoe Lake, Newfoundland and beyond, in search of landscapes and experiences that insist on being expressed in their own unique way. The results are at times richly meditative, at other times layered and complex. Always, the work is a blend of sophistication and naiveté €“€“ the direct response of a skilled hand, an unjaded eye.
