The_MJs new_c.jpgOpening for Micah is the wonderful local trio of singers  “The MJs“: Mark Tharme – vocals, guitar; Judy Boswell – vocals, percussion; MJ Russell – vocals, keyboard, percussion
Following the release of Domesticated, Micah returns to a city dear to his heart to perform a special solo show that celebrates the joys of falling in love and the complications of relationships. Micah’s unique open hearted style marries his own confessional pop with a witty modern take on cabaret.  An acclaimed songwriter with three solo CDs and a repertoire of brilliant love songs he has been interpreting for years, Micah will be accompanying himself on the piano and feature songs from Domesticated, American Standards Songbook,  R & B chestnuts and of course some old Nylons favorites.   Audiences are still discovering his ability to wow a crowd with nothing but his voice, a piano and a truly great song.

Bob Mersereau CBC Radio says “Micah Barnes used to be in The Nylons, so you know he can sing. It turns out he can also write brilliant blue-eyed soul, centered around his piano and of course, the voice. He’s had a long recording, performing career, and has become known by insiders as one of the great talents in the country. His six-track EP Domesticated, is joyful and polished. It’s ear candy, Top 40 for sure, but the kind even the most cynical punk or shoe-gazing indie fan can acknowledge as expert-league”

SOME BACKGROUND ON MICAH BARNES, SONGWRITER – Micah began writing songs after the death of his partner Rene Highway in 1990 to aids related causes.  It was six months after he joined The Nylons and it was the only way he could come to terms with his sorrow and grief.  “The songwriting worked like therapy, it helped me put a smile on on my face while I was recording and touring the world with The Nylons, which I loved doing” says Barnes.  In 1996 he moved to LA.   He was touring his first solo disc LoudBoy Radio and writing spoken work pieces that detailed anger, pain and confusion of queer adolescence.  But after years of touring and partying Micah ended up in the dark place of addiction rooted in the loss and grief of his partner which fueled many of the songs on the self titled Cabaret Noir disc Micah Barnes.   In 2008 Micah was invited to open for Molly Johnson on her Canadian tour, and headed home to Toronto to clean up, enter recovery and pull his life together.  After a few years, clean and back in Canada he met the second great love of his life.   They ended up falling in love while Micah was writing and recording Domesticated, which is why the songs and melodies are so full of simple joy.

Micah created the smartly confessional songs on 2011’s Domesticated with his brother Daniel Barnes, and JUNO award winning producer Gavin Bradley.   This critically acclaimed disc is available on Amazon, I-Tunes and CD Baby.

“Canada’s Best Male Vocalist” Richard Ryder, Proud FM.
