CETA (Canadian European Trade Agreement) will pave the way for Monsanto and its ilk from imposing their will upon Canadians! Attend action & information night (on-site action – bring your laptop and a pen and paper!) “CETA is so much more than a free-trade agreement. Tariffs between Canada and the EU are already quite low. CETA is nothing less than a wholesale transference of sovereign rights from people and governments to corporations. CETA includes obligations for provincial and municipal governments and public institutions (schools, hospitals, public utilities, etc) to consider contract bids from foreign corporations on an equal footing with domestic ones. In other words, governments will no longer have the right to spend tax dollars locally to support their own tax bases and local economies. CETA will require Canada to adopt the draconian patented-seed laws which in other countries (the US, India) are allowing Monsanto and other agribusiness corporations to seize farmers’ land, crops and equipment after GMO seeds blow onto their property. CETA will force all signatories to reduce legal protections of health and safety and the environment to the lowest common standard, and will label any new such laws (e.g. greenhouse gas regulations) as “trade irritants” that can be blocked by legal action by trade unions. Clearly, the generic drug makers are opposing CETA for the same reason that researching pharma companies are promoting it: SELF-INTEREST. But CETA is about much more than drug patents, and it behooves everyone — even pharma executives — to look at the big picture. CETA is about clearing the way for corporate profit-making at all costs: human, societal, economic, environmental and otherwise. (from post by John Wiilson – he said it so much better than I).. And it is being negotiated in Ottawa NOW.
