THE EXIT ROOM explores the nature of truth and the role of spirituality, fear, manipulation and control in the passage toward self-discovery.
Written by Theatre Gargantua's Playwright-In-Residence Michael Spence, THE EXIT ROOM tells the story of a young scientist and her search for personal validation, which leads her to join a cult only to be kidnapped for deprogramming.

This Dora award-winning work combines an inventive use of sets with innovative movement and original music and text to create an image rich, multi-layered piece.

"Look around. Listen to what the planet is saying. Don't drink the fetid water. Don't eat the genetically altered fruit. Stay out of the malignant sun. Don't stand in the burning rain. We cannot even take comfort in each other without protection. Is there anything left uncontaminated? Is there anything left on Earth that has not been corrupted from a nurturing source of life into a mortal danger?
The signs are everywhere. The time has come. Get yourselves ready for a change in management. The camel is loaded to the limit and we hold the sacred straw. Join me. I am the cure.
"I am Armageddon".

Written by playwright-in-residence Michael Spence, Theatre Gargantua's fourth cycle of work, THE EXIT ROOM originally premiered in November 2000. THE EXIT ROOM is a multi-disciplinary piece exploring fear and manipulation through the story of a young scientist who joins a cult and is later kidnapped for deprogramming.

The production is set in a labyrinth of ladders, with a dramatic screen for live video projection. It also features an original electric harp-like instrument, christened the "Ladderlin", invented as part of the set, built from wooden ladders using viola, cello and double bass strings.
