Film and television star Jayne Eastwood is appearing at Artword Theatre in the role of Thelma in Marsha Norman's Pulitzer prize-winning play, 'Night, Mother.
A hit on Broadway, 'Night, Mother is a powerful drama about a mother trying to talk her daughter out of taking her own life. Despite its dark theme, the play is illuminated by the real affection between the mother and her daughter. Superbly written, it has many light -- and even funny -- moments.
Director Jordan Merkur, of Eclectic Theatre, has the brainwave to cast Jayne Eastwood, best known for her comedic roles, as the mother. He matched her with Alison Smiley, who brings sensitivity and insight to the role of Jessie, the daughter who decides that life is too much for her.
Presented at this year's Toronto Fringe Festival, the show ran to sell-out audiences. Jayne gave a deeply moving portrayal, leavened with her quick wit and understanding of human nature.
"We just couldn't leave it at that," Merkur explains. "So I contacted Artword and they jumped on board. Jayne, who loved being on stage again, made time in her schedule. Alison said she'd do it, and the next thing we knew, the whole team was back together."
With the support of Artword Theatre, Merkur is mounting a full production for a four-week run. Designer Sean Mulcahy is back, redesigning the set and lighting to fit mainstage requirements.

Jayne Eastwood, recipient of the Earle Grey Gemini Award for Lifetime Achievement, is well known to Canadian audiences for her appearances in films such as the classic Goin' Down the Road, TV series and films such as King of Kensington, Material World, Riverdale, Small Sacrifices and Life With Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows. She also appeared in the original production of You're Gonna Be Alright Jamie Boy and the legendary Toronto production of Godspell.
Eclectic Theatre is the company that brought Toronto audiences critically acclaimed productions of Bent, Bloody Poetry, Reckless, Hello and Goodbye, Walking the Dead, Creeps, Passion, My Mother Said I Never Should, Chutzpah-a-Go-Go and Assassins (winner of 5 Dora Awards, including Best Production of a Musical).
