THE CRIME:
Using meticulously detailed realism, the artist explores
a sinister scene in her childhood home and invites
the viewer to play private eye.

THE MOTIVE:
The hard-boiled detective narrative that runs through
the paintings doubles as a very personal analogy for
Ross' private views on art and entertainment and the artist
rounds up all the usual suspects of race, class, and gender
in her investigations.

THE SCENE:
Artword is pleased to present the Toronto debut of PRIVATE.
The project has previously been shown at the Gallery of
the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts in Montreal,
Gallery 101 in Ottawa, and Struts Gallery in Sackville,
New Brunswick.

THE SUSPECT:
Chris Ross was born in Kitchener, Ontario in 1970. After
graduating from the Ontario College of Art in 1992,
Ross moved to Montreal and began exhibiting regularly.
Her work has garnered positive reviews in publications
such as MIX magazine, the Montreal Gazette, Le Devoir,
the Montreal Mirror, and HOUR magazine, as well as being
featured on the television show Ooh La La.
Ross presently resides in Toronto.

THE PAYOUT:
Ross would like to thank the Canada Council for
the B grant that aided in the creation of PRIVATE.
