C. Herbert: Blow-Up
Digital manipulation / drawing / painting
Works from several series-in-progress 1998-2000

Artword Gallery, March 22 to April 29, 2000

"What you are looking at is not what you think you see."

C. Herbert (aka Claude Breeze) is an artist who for over a decade has pioneered the use of the computer coupled with traditional art-making materials in his art.

He comments on this showing of new work at Artword:
"The main group of works are acrylic paintings on mylar. These are from various series that begin with either a pen or pencil sketch or a digital photo camera shot. I manipulate these in a computer before I go to the wall (or easel) and transform them to traditional art.
The second group of images are smaller works selected from several ongoing series of digital camera images manipulated in the computer. I call these digi-photo paintings. These began when I was traveling the city streets on a bicycle taking shots for reference and later use. However, the very late night images proved to be the most interesting. Because I was able to bring out things that weren’t visible in the regular picture, an unknown situation developed. I do not consider my image-making to be photography.
"What you are looking at is not what you think you see. I’ve manipulated the reference points."

Ted Rettig explains C. Herbert:
"C. Herbert is a name chosen by Claude Breeze to indicate that he has begun a new part of his career as an artist and a new range of intense work. The surname Herbert has always been part of Breeze's family name. He has recently chosen to use it as his new professional name. This is not meant to mislead or confuse people. It is a statement of a change in his life and in his work."
