Meiko Ando is an
artist and dancer born in Japan and now living in Toronto.
"These images are born from my dance performance. They are
sometimes created on the stage, sometimes by daydreaming,
and sometimes by dancing in spaces in Nature such as river,
lake and forest. They are stories of our life cycles
life and death and also about the unknown which exists but
is invisible to our eyes." Meiko Ando has exhibited at the
Creative Spirit Art Centre in Toronto (1998 and 2000),
Boreal Art/Nature in LAnnonciation, Quebec (2000), and
the Conseil Quebecois de lestampe Gallerie in Montreal
(2001). She is the recipient of an Arts Toronto
Protegé Award at the Art Gallery of Ontario,
1999.
Nomi Drory is an
artist living and working in Toronto. She teaches are at the
Art Centre of Central Technical School. She has a Bachelor
of Architecture degree from Israel Institute of Technology,
a Fine Art Diploma from Central Technical School in Toronto,
and a Bachelor of Education from OISE, U of T. She has
participated in a number of group shows in Tel Aviv, Israel,
in Sidney, Australia and in Toronto. "In these drawings I
have attempted to explore notions of space both
internal and external and to explore the tension and
interrelationship between the observer and the observed.
Working with vine charcoal on paper, I have sought to
emphasize tone rather than line to "paint" with the
instrument, rather than draw. The two self-portraits
represent a physical response to an emotional state.
Enclosed in their tight, narrow spaces, the figures are
paradoxically exposed and in hiding. The hand acts as a
mask, yet the eye is revealed."
Jerry Silverberg is
a visual artist, illustrator working in Toronto. His work
has been shown in many galleries and cafés throughout
the city. As an illustrator his work has appeared in
Toronto Life Magazine, Saturday Night and the
Canadian Literary Review. He has also illustrated
several books of poetry. Most recently, his work has often
appeared in the Globe and Mail. Working primarily as
a printmaker, he uses the process of the monotype (also
known as the painterly print). Unlike other
print processes, only one print is produced, therefore
making these original and unique works of art.
Ferenc Zakanyi is an
artist from Hungary now living in France. "Truth, as I see
it, comes from my life experiences. Life is struggle and
success; joy and pain; laughter and drudgery, all mixed in
with the unexpected. The unexpected prompts progress in both
my life and art. I am deeply disturbed by injustice. My art
is an effort to correct the injustices that I see.
Incongruity affects me just as profoundly. I try to balance
incongruous elements in life through my art. The result is
usually a humorous drawing. I enjoy working in colour
pencils because of their great range of effects and the
rapid action they allow. Once I have created the outline of
the form, I play with colour, texture and emotion. My goal
is to create a powerful reaction in the viewer."
