Concert: Haut-Canada Trio, oboe, bassoon, piano, May 29

April 16th, 2010
Comments Off on Concert: Haut-Canada Trio, oboe, bassoon, piano, May 29

Haut_CanadaTrio_Artword_Artbar_c.jpgSaturday, May 29, 8 pm, $10, at Artword Artbar. It’s Saturday night and the Haut-Canada Trio is back! They performed at our Classical Cafe (in association with the Brott Music Festival) in March, their debut concert as a Trio (photo right). It was fantastic, and we all wanted more, so here comes the Trio:  Marc Gibbons, oboe; Spencer deMan, bassoon; Talisa Blackman, piano. They are young, fun, and very good. And you can have a glass of wine while you enjoy the music.
Oboe, bassoon and piano are a rare combination in chamber music. What a wonderful sound. The Trio has done some innovative transcriptions. In March they played some well-known operatic duets, with oboe as the female voice and bassoon as the male. Yes, it works!

Modern_Field_Recorings_0096c.jpgSaturday May 22 at 8 pm. A wonderful band from Guelph: Modern Field Recordings — Christopher (singer, guitar), Bob (double bass), Taylor (guitar),  Jes (singer, keys), Jen (bassoon). Here’s their story: “Started at the beginning of 2009, Modern_field_recordings_c.jpgModern Field Recordings was a way to validate the many break ups had and love letters written. a chance for the three of us to be honest with those around us and maybe help people that might be going through the same thing. noble? perhaps. emotional? a little. it was never our intent to wear our hearts on our sleeves that’s just where we happened to find them.” http://www.myspace.com/modernfieldrecordings (Kori Pop recommended them to us, and we love her musical taste, so come out and here them!)

Comments Off on Gallery: John Williams, “Stuff They Don’t Tell You”

John_Williams_McUnion_600.jpgIn Artword Gallery from May 6 to 30: cartoonist and artist John Williams, with drawings from his on-going labour history series “From out of our Past: Stuff They Don’t Tell You“.
John_Williams_Porters_600.jpgHere is John’s description of his work: “I try to reach a general audience by illustrating an historic incident with a brush and ink drawing in the style of great comic strip pioneers like Alex Raymond and Leonard Starr. Then I scan it into a digital vector graphic with a brief text, an identifying “flag”, and a timeline that places the item in historical context. The panel is done in a high contrast black and white version and then digitally colourized for websites.”
Friday May 14, 7-10 pm: Artist present in the gallery during the James North Art Crawl.
